The contemporary art exhibition Beyond Unsettled Pasts brings together six Indonesian visual artists to critically reflect on how Dutch colonial legacies continue to shape society, space, and identity in present-day Indonesia. The exhibition also imagines paths toward decolonial futures rooted in care, resistance, and change. Presented by Erasmus Huis and curated by CultureLab, Beyond Unsettled Pasts opens on July 3, 2025, and runs until November 1, 2025.

Curated by Dr. Sadiah Boonstra and Sukiato Khurniawan, Beyond Unsettled Pasts invites visitors to confront the lingering effects of colonialism in present-day Indonesia. Powerful artworks by Arahmaiani, Budi Agung Kuswara, Dita Gambiro, Eldwin Pradipta, Elia Nurvista, and Maharani Mancanegara highlight the complex realities of living with the past in the present and how colonial traces continue to manifest. The exhibition delves into issues ranging from colonial extraction,  social and racial inequality and gendered and racialized imagery to opening new paths based on local values, knowledge, and ways of being to move beyond colonial legacies.
