Sudjana Kerton and Mochtar Apin: Bodies in Dialogue at ArtMoments
Sudjana Kerton and Mochtar Apin: Bodies in Dialogue was presented at ArtMoments, June 5-7 2026 in Jakarta. Presented by Sanggar Luhur and curated by Dr Sadiah Boonstra and CultureLab Consultancy, it featured nude works by Sudjana Kerton and Mochtar Apin produced between the 1950s–1990s. It explored how both artists, despite their shared focus on the human body, developed distinct approaches that reveal contrasts, conversations, and artistic evolutions across their practices.
Kerton’s early studies moved through observation and uncertainty, while Apin developed a bolder and more expressive approach over time. What united Kerton and Apin was a shared refusal to objectify or eroticize the female form. Where they differ is the specific lens of their empathy: Kerton possessed a keen eye for vulnerability and raw humanity, consistently rendering his subjects as deeply real human beings. Apin’s compositions were directly driven by his models’ agency, which characterizes his interests in the intersections between identity, perception, and freedom.
